Introduction

The Department of Construction Studies has its roots from the Department of Planning, Land Economy, and Rural Development (DPLERD), in the Faculty of Integrated Development Studies of the then Wa Campus of the University for Development Studies. In the 2007/2008 academic year, the DPLERD formed the neclues for the establishment of the Faculty of Planning and Land Management. The various core disciplinary areas of the Faculty were developed into Departments comprising the Departments of Planning, Real Estate and Land Management (DRELM), and Integrated Community Development. The DRELM commenced with the BSc. Real Estate Programme in the 2009/2010 Academic Year, and in the 2012/2013 Academic Year, introduced the BSc. Land Management Programme. In 2020, the Wa Campus of the University for Development Studies became autonomous following the enactment of Act 1001 (2019). In furtherance of the vision of the University to become a world class center of academic excellence, providing equitable access to higher education in strategic areas, the BSc. Construction Studies Programme was introduced in the 2020/2021 Academic Year under the DRELM. In October 2020, the Department of Real Estate and Land Management was split into three Departments to focus on and further develop each of the tripods – Real Estate, Construction and Land Management. The three Departments are: the Department of Real Estate, Department of Construction Studies and the Department of Land Management. The Department of Construction studies currently runs the BSc. Construction Studies Programme, to equip students with the relevant theoretical and practical knowledge, skills, and aptitude in construction technology, construction economics and construction management. The BSc. Construction Programme is unique in that it is the first of its kind to be offered in Northern Ghana; it is transdisciplinary in nature, as it is integrated into the Third Trimester Programme of the University; and it blends theory and practice to build a more serviceable graduate. In the near future, the Department would introduce a number of programmes including MSc./MPhil in Construction, with specialization in the Technology, Economics and Management of Construction (TEM-C), a Diploma in Architectural Draughtsmanship, and a Bachelors in Architecture.
