In response to meeting the education needs of professionals in various fields who cannot afford a full-time education because of their job commitments, the Institute of Distance Education and Learning (IDEL) was established in 2024 as the central coordinating unit for managing the distance and weekend education programmes in collaboration with Schools and Faculties. The IDEL is dedicated to providing accessible, flexible, affordable and high-quality education to a diverse range of learners. prof_bonyeSamuel Ziem Bonye is a Professor of Community Development at Simon Diedong Dombo University of Business and Integrated Development Studies (SDD-UBIDS). He holds a PhD in Endogenous Development Studies, an MPhil. in Development Studies, and a BA in Integrated Development Studies. With more than 23 years of experience in academia, Prof. Bonye has developed a strong and extensive experience in teaching, research, community engagement and University administration. He has served as the Vice-Dean in the Faculty of Planning and Land Management and as the Head of Department in the Department of Community Development. Prof. Bonye has supervised over 50 graduate theses to completion and has served as an external examiner for several Universities in Ghana. In demonstrating his commitment to the academic community, Prof. Bonye served as Editorial Assistant to the Journal of Planning and Land Management, as well as a reviewer for several national and international journals.  He also served on various statutory boards and ad hoc committees of the University including the University Appointments and Promotions Committee.

Prof. Bonye is a distinguished researcher in the field of natural resource management, climate change adaptation, and sustainable development. His extensive body of work includes numerous publications in high-impact journals, demonstrating his strong commitment to understanding and addressing the complexities of natural resource use, community livelihoods, and environmental sustainability. Prof. Bonye has provided consultancy services for both non-governmental organizations (NGOs) and government organizations (GOs) and has facilitated numerous field research activities with various groups in rural communities in various fields, including baseline studies, evaluative research, gender analysis, sustainability studies, and strategic planning and training for national NGOs and public sector agencies in Ghana. Since 2005, he has led or co-led several project initiatives, successfully attracting significant funding to support the growth of the University in multiple areas, including teaching, learning, and capacity development for lecturers.
