Africanus Lewil Diedong (PhD) is an Associate Professor of Social Communications, Department of Communication Studies (DECS) at the Simon Diedong Dombo University of Business and Integrated Development Studies (SDD-UBIDS), Ghana. Prof. Diedong an alumnus of the Pontifical Gregorian University, Rome and Ghana Institute of Journalism. He served as a former Head of the African Studies Department, University for Development Studies (UDS), Wa Campus from July 2009 to July 2013. He is former Vice-Dean of the Faculty of Integrated Development Studies (FIDS) from September 2017 to July 2020 and August 2020 to June 2021.
Prof. Diedong has supervised over 21 Master of Philosophy (M.Phil) theses in his department and other departments of UDS and SDD-UBIDS. He is an internal examiner for both M.Phil and Ph.D theses in SDD-UBIDS and serves/has served as an external examiner to Ghana Institute of Journalism, University of Ghana, University of Education, Winneba and University of Fort Hare, South Africa.
Prof. Diedong has to his credit 27 articles published in reputable journals, one book and seven book chapters. He is a reviewer and board member of reputable journals, which include Journal of African Media Studies and Journal of Communications, Media and Society. His research interests are Journalism Education, Development Communication, Community Radio, Media Ethics, and Media, Governance and Democracy. He has expertise in newspaper editing and academic journals editing. Prof. Diedong is a former Editor-in-Chief of the Ghana Journal of Development Studies, a peer-review journal of FIDS, UDS/SDD-UBIDS from 2013-2020.
Prof. Diedong led a research effort in collaboration with some senior members of DECS, which won a grant from UNICEF to facilitate mainstreaming of Social and Behaviour Change Communication into the Development Communication/C4D Programme at SDD-UBIDS, from March 2020 to present date. Some notable consultancy services Prof. Diedong carried out include Consultant for the Ghana Statistical Service in November 2013 and April 2014 and Internal Co-Evaluator of Participatory Community Radio and the Right to Communicate – A Singular Pathway to the SDGs (CR-SDGs) in partnership with Ghana Community Radio Network and Crossing Borders, Denmark in April 2021.
Prof. Diedong is a member of the National Media Commission of Ghana. He was offered an award for Excellence in Communication at the University of Fribourg, Switzerland from UCIP, now known as SIGNIS in September, 2001. He is a former Fellow of Porticus Fellowships for Research in Media, Religion and Culture. Prof. Diedong is a member of the International Association of Media and Communication Research and the Communication Educators Association of Ghana.
