Overview of Centre

Established in 2021, the Centre for Migration and Security Studies (CMSS) focuses on the study of migration and security issues, interdisciplinary research, consultancy and training.

The objectives of the Centre include:

  • To provide high-quality, multidisciplinary academic programmes from certificate to doctoral levels that equip students with theoretical knowledge and practical skills to understand and address contemporary migration and security challenges in local, regional, and global contexts;
  • To promote research, policy analysis, and scholarly inquiry into the dynamics of migration, human mobility, and security to inform evidence-based policymaking and contribute to national and international debates;
  • To foster collaboration and partnerships with governmental agencies, international organisations, academic institutions, and civil society to enhance training, research, and policy engagement on migration and security issues; and
  • To contribute to capacity building and professional development by offering flexible, accessible, and career-oriented programmes that meet the needs of professionals, practitioners, and public officials involved in migration management and security governance.

Our progrommes

Programmes currently on offer in the department include the following:

    1. Certificate In Migration and Security (8-month programme): The Certificate in Migration and Security is a six (6) to eight (8) months programme designed to provide foundational knowledge on migration dynamics, security issues, and their global and regional contexts. The programme aims to equips students with analytical skills to understand and respond to migration-related and security challenges.
    2. Diploma Migration and Security (2-year regular programme): The Diploma in Migration and Security programme is a two-year programme designed to equip students with practical and theoretical knowledge to understand the complex relationship between migration and security in national, regional, and global contexts. It aims to build the capacity of individuals working or aspiring to work in migration management, border security, humanitarian response, and policy analysis.
    3. BSc. Migration and Security (4-year regular programme): The BSc in Migration and Security is a four-year programme that aims to provide students with an in-depth understanding of the drivers, patterns, and governance of migration, and their intersection with national and human security concerns. It is designed to develop analytical, research, and policy skills for addressing migration-related challenges in both local and international contexts.
    4. Postgraduate Diploma in Migration and Security (1-year programme): The weekend Postgraduate Diploma in Migration and Security is a 1-year programme, which aims to provide students with advanced theoretical and practical understanding of the complex relationship between migration and security in contemporary societies. It is designed to build the capacity of professionals, policymakers, and researchers to analyse, interpret, and respond to migration-related security issues through evidence-based approaches.
    5. MSc. Migration and Security (1-year regular programme): The weekend MSc. in Migration and Security is a 1-year programme, which aims to provide students with advanced theoretical and practical understanding of the complex relationship between migration and security in contemporary societies. It is designed to build the capacity of professionals, policymakers, and researchers to analyse, interpret, and respond to migration-related security issues through evidence-based approaches.
    6. MPhil. Migration and Security (2-year regular programme): The MPhil. in Migration and Security is a 2-year programme designed to develop students’ capacity for independent and critical research on issues at the intersection of migration and security. It provides advanced training in theoretical frameworks, research methodologies, and policy analysis relevant to migration governance, human mobility, and conflict dynamics. The programme aims to prepare graduates for academic, policy, and professional roles that require rigorous inquiry and evidence-based decision-making in migration and security contexts.
    7. Phd. Migration And Security(3-year regular programme): The PhD in Migration and Security programme aims to cultivate advanced research expertise in the complex and evolving relationship between migration, security, and development. It is designed to equip scholars with the theoretical knowledge, methodological skills, and critical perspectives necessary to contribute original research to academic, policy, and global debates.

Diploma Migration and Security

The programme consists of taught courses, field and industrial work, migration and security seminars, and a term paper. The taught courses (e.g., Introductory French I; Introduction to Migration and Security; Migration and Rural Development; Introduction to Migration and International Relations; Labour Migration in Africa; Contemporary Issues in Migration and Security; Migration and Social Protection Services) are 27 in total, and the total number of credit hours required to complete the programme is 81.

BSc. Migration and Securityt

The programme consists of taught courses, field and industrial work, migration and security seminars and a project work. The taught courses (e.g., Introductory French I; Introduction to Migration and Security; Theories of Migration; Migration and Rural Development; Labour Migrations in Africa; Contemporary Issues in Migration and Security; Economics of Migration and Sustainable Development; Environment, Climate Change and Migration; Migration, Poverty and Inequality; Migration and Human Rights; Migration and International Security; Refugeeism and Humanitarian Assistance) are 44 in total, and the total number of credit hours required to complete the programme is 155.

Postgraduate Diploma in Migration And Security

The programme comprises taught courses, practicum (field trips), and the completion of a term paper. The first semester is solely allocated to classroom instruction, while the second semester is a combination of classroom instruction and term paper writing. The taught courses (e.g., Techniques and Methods of Migration and Security Analysis; Theories of Migration; Environment, Migration and Security; Perspectives and Theories of Human Security; Transnational Migration, Crime and International Relations) are nine (9) in total, and the total number of credit hours required to complete the programme is 31.

MSc. Migration and Security

The programme comprises taught courses, practicum (field trips), and the completion of a term paper. The first semester solely allocated to classroom instruction, while the second semester is a combination of classroom instruction and term paper writing. The taught courses (e.g., Techniques and Methods of Migration and Security Analysis; Theories of Migration; Environment, Migration and Security; Perspectives and Theories of Human Security; Transnational Migration, Crime and International Relations) are 10 in total, and the total number of credit hours required to complete the programme is 39.

MPhil. Migration and Security

The programme comprises taught courses, practicum, graduate seminars and the completion of a thesis. The first year is allocated to classroom instruction, while the second year is reserved for the thesis. The taught courses (e.g., Techniques and Tools for Migration and Security Analysis; Theories of Migration; Philosophical Foundations of Social Sciences Research; Environment, Migration and Security; Perspectives and Theories of Human Security; Transnational Migration, Crime and International Relations) are 12 in total, and the total number of credit hours required to complete the programme is 65.

Ph.D Migration and Security

The PhD is a 3-years programme. The programme comprises taught courses, practicum, graduate seminars and the completion of a thesis. The first year is allocated to classroom instruction, while the second to third years are reserved for the thesis. The taught courses (e.g., Migration Analysis; Theories of Migration; Environment, Migration and Security; Perspectives and Theories of Human Security; Advanced Research Methods in Migration and Security Studies; Transnational Migration, Crime and International Relations) are 10 in total, and the total number of credit hours required to complete the programme is 58.

Diploma Migration and Security

The entry requirements for the programme include the following:

Senior Secondary School Certificate Examination (SSSCE)/West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE)

As regards this category of applicants, candidates seeking admission must have credit passes (i.e., at least grade D in SSSCE or D7 in WASSCE) in Core English, Core Mathematics, Integrated Science/Social Studies, and any three elective subjects in General Arts or Business Programmes only. SSSCE applicants must obtain grades ranging from A to D, whereas WASSCE applicants must have grades ranging from A1 to D7.

  1. General Certificate of Education (GCE) Candidates

Candidates who possess the GCE certificates must have obtained five (5) credit passes at GCE Ordinary Level, including English language and Mathematics, and three (3) passes at the GCE Advanced Level in a relevant subject area (General Arts and Business subjects only). For the GCE applicants, one of the ‘A’ Level passes should be at least grade ‘D’. For more information on this, applicants should consult the university’s admission requirements online. 

  1. Mature Applicants

Mature applicants must have attained at least 25 years of age as at the time of the application. They must be holders of SSSCE/WASSCE or GCE Ordinary and Advanced certificates. This category of applicants must pass a written examination to be conducted by the CMSS/University. Applicants with working experience with key migration and security related institutions have an added advantage.

BSc. Migration and Securityt

The entry requirements for the programme include the following:

Senior Secondary School Certificate Examination (SSSCE)/West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE)

As regards this category of applicants, candidates seeking admission must have credit passes (i.e., at least grade D in SSSCE or C6 in WASSCE) in Core English, Core Mathematics, Integrated Science/Social Studies, and any three elective subjects in General Arts or Business Programmes only. SSSCE applicants must obtain grades ranging from A to D, whilst WASSCE applicants must have grades ranging from A1 to C6. Overall, SSSCE holders must have an aggregate score of 24 or better, while those applying with WASSCE results must have an aggregate score of 36 or better.

  • Hold a good first degree (Bachelor) in a relevant field of study from a recognized tertiary institution;
  • Submit an official transcript of academic record;
  • Submit three referees’ reports, two of which must be from people who are familiar with the applicant’s academic work;
  • Submit a research proposal; and
  • Pass a selection interview.

MSc. Migration and Security

To gain admission onto the programme leading to the award of the MSc. in Migration and Security, a candidate must:

  • Hold a good bachelor’s degree in a relevant field of study from a recognized tertiary institution;
  • Submit an official transcript of academic record;
  • Submit three referees’ reports, two of which must be from people who are familiar with the applicant’s academic work;
  • Submit a research proposal; and
  • Pass a selection interview.

MPhil. Migration and Security

To gain admission onto the programme leading to the award of the MPhil. in Migration and Security, a candidate must:

  • Hold a good bachelor’s degree (second class lower or better) in a relevant field of study from a recognized tertiary institution;
  • Submit an official transcript of academic record;
  • Submit three referees’ reports, two of which must be from people who are familiar with the applicant’s academic work;
  • Submit a research proposal; and
  • Pass a selection interview.

Additional entry requirements:

  • Candidates with a Postgraduate Diploma in Migration and Security will have an added advantage
  • Candidates with MSc in Migration and Security and other related fields are eligible to enrol for a one-year MPhil top-up.

Ph.D Migration and Security

To gain admission onto the programme leading to the award of a doctorate degree (PhD), a candidate must:

  • Hold a good MPhil/MSc by research in a relevant field of study from a recognized tertiary institution;
  • Submit an official transcript of academic record;
  • Submit three referees’ reports, two of which must be from people who are familiar with the applicant’s academic work;
  • Submit a research proposal; and
  • Pass a selection interview.

Diploma Migration and Security

Specifically, the programme seeks to prepare students to be able to:

  • Describe clearly the interconnectedness between migration and security;
  • Identify and relate the key concepts and theories in migration and security to real life situations;
  • Interpret migration and security frameworks and policies; and
  • Use basic research skills in migration and security.

BSc. Migration and Securityt

The programme seeks to equip students with the requisite competence to be able to:

  • Explain the complex relationships between migration and security dynamics;
  • Analyse concepts, theories and migration and security principles;
  • Evaluate migration and security policies; and
  • Develop research expertise in contemporary migration and security matters.

Postgraduate Diploma in Migration And Security

Based on this broad aim, the programme seeks to prepare students to be able to:

  • Analyse the dynamics of global migration governance and its relationship with security;
  • Examine the security approaches to address migration and security challenges; and
  • Assess the legal and policy environment pertaining to global migration governance and security.

MSc. Migration and Security

Following from this general aim, the specific objectives of the MSc. in Migration and Security programme are to prepare students to be able to:

  • Demonstrate understanding of the theoretical and practical interrelationships between migration and security;
  • Develop knowledge of the conditions associated with the vulnerability of migrants;
  • Analyse the complex dynamics and trade-offs between migration and security;
  • Design security approaches to deal with migration and security challenges; and
  • Evaluate the prevailing policies and legal frameworks on migration and security.

MPhil. Migration and Security

Based on this broad aim, the MPhil. in Migration and Security programme seeks to prepare students to be able to:

  • Develop theoretical and practical understanding of the connexion between migration and security;
  • Analyse migration and security conditions surrounding the vulnerability of migrants;
  • Appraise the dynamics and trade-offs between migration and security;
  • Devise the various security approaches related to global migration and security governance;
  • Assess the policies and legal frameworks on migration and security; and
  • Debate contemporary discourses on migration and security through evidence-based research.

Ph.D Migration and Security

Based on this broad aim, the PhD in Migration and Security programme seeks to prepare students to be able to:

  • Develop critical thinking and research skills in the field of migration and security;
  • Analyse the contemporary debates in migration and security through research; and
  • Evaluate the complex relationships between global migration and security governance.

Diploma Migration and Security

On completion of the programme, graduates will be able to:

  • Relate the interconnectedness between migration and security, demonstrating a basic understanding of their interrelations;
  • Apply key concepts and theories in migration and security to real-life situations, illustrating a practical understanding of their implications and applications;
  • Interpret migration and security frameworks and policies, demonstrating the ability to explain their effectiveness and implications; and
  • Utilise fundamental research skills in the fields of migration and security to gather, analyse, and present information effectively.

BSc. Migration and Securityt

The outcomes anticipated from the BSc in Migration and Security programme include the following:

  • Graduates will exhibit a deep understanding of the multi-faceted connections between migration and security dynamics to enable them to articulate the complex relationships within these domains;
  • Graduates will be able to critically evaluate existing migration and security policies;
  • Graduates will be able to effectively apply concepts, theories, and principles of migration and security in real-world situations; and

Postgraduate Diploma in Migration And Security

MSc. Migration and Security
