The Simon Diedong Dombo University of Business and Integrated Development Studies (SDD-UBIDS) has officially launched a large-scale Tree Planting Project on May 31, 2025 on the Bamahu Campus, Wa, as part of its commitment to environmental sustainability and climate action. The project was initiated through a collaborative effort between university management, the Students’ Representative Council (SRC), and the Global Shea Alliance.
Following a symbolic tree planting, the Vice-Chancellor, Professor Emmanuel Kanchebe Derbile, reaffirmed the University’s dedication to climate resilience, biodiversity conservation, and public environmental education. He emphasized that the project seeks to enhance green spaces, regulate local climate, promote ecological awareness, and foster a sense of responsibility among staff, students, and surrounding communities.

In his remarks, Professor Derbile highlighted the additional benefits of the initiative, including the creation of forest belts, protection of the University land boundaries, strengthened relations between the University and its neighbouring communities, and potential economic empowerment through tree-based livelihoods.
A total of 5,300 saplings, comprising mahogany, dawadawa, grafted shea, and acacia were planted in the first phase, with a target of 70,000 saplings. The trees were strategically planted along the campus boundaries and designated green zones. A grand launch of the project is scheduled for July 2025 at Sankana in the Nadowli-Kaleo District by the Global Shea Alliance.
Professor Derbile underscored the collective responsibility required to sustain the initiative, calling on students, staff, community members, and the public to nurture and protect the planted saplings. He noted that future generations of students would take pride in returning to see the trees they helped plant flourishing.
Acknowledging the support of the Global Shea Alliance and the SRC, he stated: “When the last tree dies, the last man dies, and the last woman dies. If we care for the trees and the environment, we care for humanity. Let everyone plant at least one tree.”
Participants at the launch expressed excitement and a renewed commitment to environmental protection. The University has pledged to regularly monitor and care for the trees and hopes the initiative will inspire other institutions and communities to embark on similar environmental actions.
As part of its broader vision, SDD-UBIDS continues to integrate eco-friendly policies and environmental awareness into its operations and academic programmes to develop environmentally responsible graduates.
The event was attended by the University’s Director of Works and Municipal Services, the Head of Quantity Survey, SRC President, students, women’s groups from Bamahu, and members of the media.
