1.3 FACULTY OF PLANNING AND LAND MANAGEMENT

Vision

To become a leading Faculty for research, training and the formation of versatile, competent professionals in the built environment and development planning.

Mission

In fulfillment of its vision, the Faculty shall seek to;

  • Promote diversity in its approach to education using practically-oriented, community-based, problem solving, interactive research, teaching and learning methodologies and outreach programmes
  • Train holistic professionals grounded in theory and practice, equipped with relevant tools and techniques and with the requisite attitude to facilitate development at all the levels of governance
  • Ensure continuous relevance of its academic programmes to the national development agenda through periodic review of curricular as well as teaching and learning processes and development of new programmes to meet the changing needs of society
  • Forge collaborations and networks with organisations and institutions in and outside of Ghana for the mutual benefit of the organisations and institutions involved
  • Continuously provide policy advice and practical input towards the advancement of the built environment education and research in general for a transformed local, national and global development
  • Work to ensure equitable development through facilitating the design of policies, grogrammes and activities that will bridge the rural-urban inequality gap as well as the gender gap; and to address in particular the increasing phenomenon of urban poverty.

  1. QUALIFICATIONS, ATTRIBUTES AND CONSIDERATIONS

A person seeking appointment as Dean of Faculty/School MUST have the following qualifications and attributes:

  1. Be a Professor/Associate Professor or Senior Lecturer in at least one of THE relevant disciplines of the Faculty or School;
  2. Have a PhD in one of THE relevant disciplines of the Faculty/School and MUST be capable of providing academic leadership in curriculum development, accreditation and teaching, research and extension in THE discipline(s) of focus per requirements of the Ghana Tertiary Education Commission(GTEC);
  3. Be a Senior Member of the School or Faculty with voting rights;
  4. Show evidence of leadership and experience in management, sound judgment, vision, initiative, resourcefulness, and professionalism in the discharge of his or her duties;
  5. Show evidence of capacity for scholarship and continuous research and dissemination of knowledge in his or her field through research and publications;
  6. Be of good character, able to inspire, direct, motivate and drive staff and students to achieve academic excellence;
  7. Be disciplined and demonstrate adherence to University regulations as a statutory body and MUST NOT have  conducted himself/herself in a manner that has brought the name of the University into disrepute;
  8. MUST be able to hold office for a period of three(3) years on terms and conditions approved by Council, before reaching the statutory retirement age of sixty(60) years and may be eligible for reappointment of up to three (3) years;
  9. Any persons who have served as Dean for two consecutive terms or more of the same Faculty/School do not qualify to apply unless at least three(3) years have elapsed from the date that he/she last held that office or the date that his/her tenure expires;
  10. A successful candidate should NOTE that he/she can be reassigned any other job role to serve their unexpired term if the appointing authority deems it necessary in the interest of the University;
  11. All shortlisted candidates should NOTE that they will be required to submit themselves first to a search process and subsequently, to the probability of an election or not, as the appointing authority may determine.
  1. FUNCTIONS AS DEAN

A successful candidate (Dean) should be WILLING AND ABLE to perform the following functions:

  1. He/she shall be responsible to the Vice-Chancellor for providing leadership to the school or faculty and for maintaining and promoting efficiency and good order in accordance with policies and procedures prescribed by Law, the University’s Statutes, or as may be determined from time to time by Council, the Academic Board and the School/Faculty Board;
  2. He/she shall be the Chairperson of the School/Faculty Board and shall convene Board meetings as statutory requirements;
  3. He/she shall, in consultation with Heads of Departments, be responsible for postgraduate training of the school/faculty’s graduates and lecturers on study leave;
  4. He/she shall co-ordinate the work of the Departments within the school/faculty; and
  5. Perform any other duty(ies) assigned to him/her by the Vice-Chancellor.
