The Minister of Education, Hon. Haruna Iddrisu, officially inaugurated the reconstituted Governing Council of the Simon Diedong Dombo University of Business and Integrated Development Studies (SDD-UBIDS) on Monday, May 12, 2025, in Accra. The 11-member Council is chaired by Dr. Benjamin Bewa-nyog Kumbuor, a renowned legal scholar, academic, politician and statesman.
Dr. Kumbuor holds a PhD in Law from the University of Warwick and a Bachelor of Laws from the University of Ghana. He has served as Ghana’s Minister for Health, Interior, Defence, and as Attorney General and Minister for Justice. He also represented the Lawra-Nandom and later the Nandom constituency in Parliament and has taught at the Ghana School of Law and the University of Warwick, specialising in law and development, taxation, and constitutional law.
During the ceremony, members of the Council took the Oath of Office and the Oath of Secrecy. In his remarks, the Minister for Education emphasised the urgent infrastructure challenges facing the University, stating, “SDD-UBIDS currently lacks adequate infrastructure to support its mandate.” He indicated that the Government had provided some seed funding to the University and would complete one of its GETFund projects in the year, and settle the institution’s outstanding legacy electricity debt. He also announced that the University’s name will be changed once the necessary legislation is laid before Parliament. The Minister also congratulated the Vice-Chancellor, Professor Emmanuel Kanchebe Derbile for his appointment to serve on the Governing Board of the Ghana Tertiary Education Commission.
The Chairman, Dr. Kumbuor, expressed gratitude for the opportunity to serve and affirmed the Council’s commitment to the development of the University. He called on the Ministry to support the completion of ongoing infrastructure projects and appealed for targeted assistance towards the development of the University’s law programme. Dr. Kumbuor further disclosed that he has a personal connection with the University, having chaired the Technical Committee of Cabinet that approved the establishment of the University of Business and Integrated Development Studies as the name proposed at that time. He indicated that he remains personally indebted to the University.
