Simon Diedong Dombo University of Business and Integrated Development Studies (SDD-UBIDS) proudly welcomed its second Vice-Chancellor, Professor Emmanuel Kanchebe Derbile, on September 26, 2024. The investiture ceremony, marked by a display of academic excellence and tradition, set the stage for Prof. Derbile to share his transformative vision for the University. His focus is on tackling infrastructure challenges and driving academic growth through innovative strategies.
In his address, Prof. Derbile emphasised the importance of an integrated approach to university management, combining learning, adaptation, and entrepreneurship to foster governance and innovation. He acknowledged the complexities that universities face in modern times, stating, “I take the stance that integrating useful elements of the concepts of a learning university, an adaptive university, and an entrepreneurial university is imperative for steering our young university towards achieving growth, impact, and sustainability.”
One of the most pressing issues Prof. Derbile aims to resolve is the infrastructure deficit in SDD-UBIDS. He outlined a comprehensive strategy that includes exploring various funding options such as advocacy for public funding, utilising internally generated funds (IGF), and promoting public-private partnerships. Additionally, Prof. Derbile stressed the need for completing ongoing GETFUND projects, which are crucial for enhancing the university’s infrastructure.
Looking ahead, Prof. Derbile aims to expand the University’s academic offerings, particularly in natural and health sciences. His vision includes establishing a Faculty of Extraction Sciences (FES) and a School of Medical Sciences (SMS). These initiatives, he believes, will diversify SDD-UBIDS’ programmes, increase student enrollment, and contribute to national development.
Prof. Derbile, who assumed office on May 1, 2024, brings over 24 years of experience in academia. He succeeded Professor Philip Duku Osei, the University’s first Vice-Chancellor, following his retirement.
Since its establishment in 2019, SDD-UBIDS has rapidly grown as an independent institution. Under Prof. Derbile’s leadership, the University is poised to continue on its path toward fulfilling its mission of academic excellence and sustainable development.
