From May 5 to 17, 2025, the University of Amsterdam, Netherlands, hosted 3 Erasmus+ exchange students from the SD Dombo University of Business and Integrated Development Studies (SDD-UBIDS), Wa, Ghana.   The exchange programme is part of the Re-imagining International Development Studies course project, fostering reflection on the diverse identities and practices of IDS students across cultural and institutional contexts.  It involves blended mobility exchange with the Research Master’s in International Development Studies programme at the University of Amsterdam.

Initiated by the Directorate of International Collaborations in partnership with the School of Graduate Studies and Research, the project aims to offer international mobility experiences for graduate students, enhancing their intercultural skills and internationalising their learning experiences. Participating students enjoyed a taste of Dutch culture through a guided canal tour, a visit to the Zeedijk, and walks in the historic De Plantage neighbourhood. Cultural outings included day trips to Delft, Utrecht, and The Hague, strolls through Amsterdam’s vibrant streets, and explorations of local staples such as the Albert Cuyp Market. Food played a significant role in their cultural experience, as students sampled Dutch treats like kroketten and pastries, while also longing for familiar flavours from home, particularly the Ghanaian dish Banku. Academically, students took part in (intercultural) workshops, toured the Roeterseiland campus, and engaged in joint sessions with UvAIDS students from both Master’s programmes;

The exchange not only strengthened academic ties but also fostered personal connections and mutual understanding, highlighting the value of integrating diverse global perspectives into international development education. Upon returning to SDD-UBIDS, the students shared positive and enlightening experiences from their visit. Want to meet Patricia, Winifred, and Ignatius?
