The Simon Diedong Dombo University of Business and Integrated Development Studies (SDD-UBIDS), through its School of Graduate Studies and Research, in collaboration with the Directorate of International Collaborations and the Faculty of Integrated Development Studies (FIDS), organised a Visiting Scholar Lecture on May 16, 2025, on the topic: “Harnessing the power of mixed methods approaches for integrative development research.”

The lecture was delivered by Dr. Matthew Chidozie Ogwu of the Department of Sustainable Development, Appalachian State University, USA, under the auspices of the Council for the Development of Social Science Research in Africa (CODESRIA)’s African Diaspora Fellowship Programme. The event was attended by faculty, graduate students, and researchers across various disciplines. Drawing on his scientific background and extensive publication record – over 200 articles – Dr. Ogwu elaborated on how combining qualitative and quantitative methodologies enhances the quality and impact of development research. He discussed key mixed methodological designs which included convergent, explanatory, exploratory, embedded, and multiphase, and provided practical examples, including the use of Python for data analysis. The lecturer emphasised the relevance of mixed methods in addressing “wicked problems” such as health disparities, food insecurity, and environmental degradation, which require multi-dimensional analysis. The interactive session that followed allowed participants to ask insightful questions on methodological integration, design selection, and challenges in research.

Dr. Ogwu concluded by encouraging young researchers to embrace mixed methods as a strategic tool for impactful research. He expressed gratitude to his host collaborator, Dr. Enock A. Kosoe, host dean, Prof. Africanus Diedong, for their warm hospitality. Prof. Millicent A. Akaateba, the Director of International Collaborations and moderator of the event, extended heartfelt thanks to Dr. Ogwu on behalf of the University Management for his visit to SDD-UBIDS. She also expressed gratitude to all attendees, including staff and students, for their participation. The contribution of the Dean of the School of Graduate Studies and Research, Prof. Bernard A.A. Akanbang, in organising the event was duly recognised.
